MAMA ‘Mother Nature’ Arrives in Madrid: Where Art and Ecology Converge at Fundación PONS

The international exhibition, presented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, opens on 8 September 2026 in the Spanish capital, bringing together artists from Azerbaijan, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Ukraine, Georgia, the United Kingdom, Germany, and beyond.

Following acclaimed presentations in Baku, Manama, Rome, London, Tbilisi, Berlin, Tirana, Geneva, and Riga, the MAMA ‘Mother Nature’ international art project lands in Madrid to open a new chapter in its expanding global journey. Far more than a travelling exhibition, MAMA has evolved into a global cultural platform exploring the profound connections between contemporary art, environmental consciousness, and intercultural dialogue.

The Madrid edition will be hosted at Fundación PONS from 9 to 18 September 2026, with its official opening on 8 September. The show is presented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Kingdom of Spain, celebrating the growing cultural dialogue between the two nations.

Conceived by Leyla Aliyeva, Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Founder of the IDEA Public Union, and curated by Emin Mammadov, the exhibition brings together a distinguished group of contemporary artists whose works transcend conventional representations of nature. Working across painting, sculpture, installation, textile art, photography, and mixed media, the participating artists offer individual reflections that collectively reveal the richness and complexity of humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

“From the gardens of the Alhambra to the mountain landscapes of the Caucasus, from the Mediterranean to the Caspian Sea, nature has never been merely a geographical setting,” notes the press release. “Across both cultures, it has served as a source of inspiration, a repository of memory, and a symbol of continuity between generations.”

Rather than simply illustrating environmental concerns, MAMA invites viewers to engage emotionally and intellectually with the ecosystems that sustain both culture and life. At a time when ecological challenges transcend geography, the project reminds us that the future of our planet cannot be shaped through policy or technology alone: “It also depends upon culture, imagination, empathy, and our collective capacity to recognise ourselves as part of a shared living world.”
