Book by Chinese author Yang Bo presented in Banja Luka, exploring the life of China’s president, the transformation of the Chinese economy, and China’s international development initiatives.
On 14 October, the book The Brilliant Path – For the People and Moving Forward, by Chinese author Yang Bo, was presented in Banja Luka. Through one hundred short stories, the book portrays the life, political rise, and leadership of Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China. The publication is particularly notable for having Mladen Ivanić, former Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of BiH, as its reviewer. The book was presented by Nenad Novaković, editor of the publishing house Besjed, which published the book for the Bosnian and Herzegovinian market; Mladen Ivanić; Borislav Marić, former Ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Beijing; and Zoran Pavlović, an economic analyst. The book is structured around four thematic sections, taking readers from Xi Jinping’s childhood and youth through his political rise to the economic reforms and international initiatives that have shaped China’s contemporary development.
The first part of the book focuses on Xi Jinping’s upbringing, highlighting stories about his time in a poor village in Shaanxi Province during the Cultural Revolution. His father, Xi Zhongxun, a senior Chinese Communist Party official and former revolutionary, suffered political persecution during that period, which also had a profound impact on his family. At the age of 15, in 1969, Xi Jinping was sent to the countryside as part of a government programme that dispatched young people to rural areas. He spent nearly seven years living under difficult conditions. According to his later accounts, these experiences significantly shaped his attitude towards work, society, and life’s challenges. This section of the book seeks to explain how personal hardship, exposure to poverty, and life in a rural community influenced the political and social outlook of China’s future leader.
The second part traces his gradual rise within the Communist Party of China and the state administration. Through various party and government positions, including senior leadership roles in Chinese provinces, Xi Jinping gained political and administrative experience that gradually brought him to the highest levels of the state. In 2008, he became Vice President of China; in 2012, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China; and in 2013, President of the People’s Republic of China.
Economic Transformation and Technological Development
The third part of the book examines the political and, above all, economic reforms and transformations that have shaped China under Xi Jinping’s leadership. During this period, the Chinese economy continued to grow substantially, accompanied by significant changes in the structure of production and national development priorities. China, whose exports had long relied heavily on labour-intensive manufacturing, further expanded its high-tech industries and sectors generating greater added value. Telecommunications, electric vehicles, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and green technologies have become particularly important. These developments reflect China’s efforts to strengthen its technological independence, enhance competitiveness, and secure a more prominent position in global value chains. According to data on China’s gross domestic product, the country’s nominal GDP increased from approximately USD 9.8 trillion at the beginning of this period to around USD 20.7 trillion in more recent estimates. This growth is one of the key indicators of the transformation of the Chinese economy, although its implications should also be considered in the context of broader global economic trends.
China and New International Development Initiatives
The fourth part of the book explores China’s international initiatives and their impact on the development of other countries. Through short stories, it presents the experiences of individuals and communities in countries that have benefited from opportunities for infrastructure development, economic growth, and social progress associated with China’s international engagement. Particular attention is given to China’s contribution to the development of international institutions and financial mechanisms intended to expand access to funding for infrastructure projects and development cooperation. In this context, Chinese initiatives, including the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Belt and Road Initiative, form part of a broader process of change in the international economic order. This perspective opens up a wider discussion about China’s role in global development, its relations with traditional international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, and the opportunities that new partnerships can offer developing countries.

A Book Offering a Perspective on Contemporary China
The Brilliant Path – For the People and Moving Forward offers an accessible, narrative account of Xi Jinping’s life and the transformations that have shaped China over recent decades. Through one hundred stories, the author connects the Chinese president’s personal biography with broader processes of political consolidation, economic development, technological modernisation, and China’s growing international presence. The book presentation in Banja Luka also provided an opportunity to discuss China as one of the most influential actors in contemporary international relations, its development model, and the prospects for strengthening cooperation with countries across the region. The fact that Mladen Ivanić, former Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and former head of the country’s diplomacy, reviewed the book further connects this publication with broader questions of international relations, diplomatic dialogue, and understanding contemporary political and economic developments.
